Chiller efficiency?
Legacy centrifugal chiller: 0.70-0.90 kW/ton efficiency. Modern premium: 0.40-0.55 kW/ton. 40-50% efficiency gain possible on 20+ year old chillers. Water-cooled chiller: 0.45-0.65 kW/ton. Air-cooled: 0.85-1.20 kW/ton (less efficient but no cooling tower). IPLV (Integrated Part Load Value): more relevant metric for real-world efficiency.
R-22 phase-out?
R-22 fully phased out in 2020 for new equipment, 2030 for service refrigerant. R-22 spot price: $100-200/lb now (was $20/lb in 2010). Legacy chiller retrofit to R-134a: $25-150k depending on size.
